From the birth certificate, you can learn the full names of a child’s parents, including the mother’s maiden name. This will help you to track down the correct marriage certificate.
A marriage certificate will tell you:
- full names of bride and groom
- age of the bride and groom (if they are over the age of 21 it might just say “Full”)
- date of marriage
- place of marriage
- father’s name and occupation. If the father is deceased at the time of marriage it might also say this.
Because the marriage certificate gives the names of the bride and groom’s fathers, you can use this to find the birth certificates for the bride and groom. This takes you back another generation.
